The new blog - July 31st 2021

As many of you that follow me on Twitter will know, I confessed recently that I've put on all the weight I'd lost in just a year. Although I've escaped many of the issues surrounding COVID, for some reason I really struggled through the lockdowns, particularly with my mental health, and like many people, I use food as an emotional crutch. I don't really drink and have never smoked or taken drugs so it's always been food... cakes, chocolate, crisps, you name it, I'll wolf it down!

I'd always decided to have a break from the pressure of doing the steps target when the previous challenge ended but after working in Sainsbury's (June-August 2019) doing early morning shifts, it soon became apparent that I was going to struggle to continue walking. Not only were the 3am starts tiring, it was the complete disruption of my working day. I  basically spent four or five days a week shattered, hence I couldn't get myself out to walk. The job was picking orders which sounds easy enough and most of the time it was. I ended up doing around 7,000-9,000 steps per shift but it was all short, twisty movements which put pressure on my knees to the point where I was struggling towards the end of a shift. That also went some way to me feeling like I couldn't go out for a walk and hence the leisure walking stopped completely as a result.

The job and the injuries, combined with my lack of willpower and decision not to worry too much about what I ate means that now I've weigh in at 23 stone 2 pounds. That puts me back to the beginning of my journey on July 1st 2019. However, I'm quite confident that I can shift this newly arrived weight off again. I need a new target so am thinking of trying to lose seven stone in a year, tricky but achievable especially as the first two or three stones should come off quite quickly

We'll see how it goes but another reason for getting back on the horse, so to speak, is my mental health. While I'm far from a sufferer of any serious MH issues, I do feel a lot worse these days now I've lost the benefit of going out for a walk along the railway path. To be honest, in the first lockdown, the path wasn't a great place to be as it was sometimes too busy to enjoy. That's great in the bigger picture but selfishly from my personal point of view, I just couldn't enjoy the last few weeks of walking on there.

As someone that spends a lot of time in front of a PC, I genuinely enjoyed the break from it all and the ability to walk in a field, along the cycle path, beside a river, climbing a hill etc.  So all in all, hopefully it's back to "business as normal", I hope. Will try to update the blog regularly and am determined to achieve the 5k steps every day too. Thanks for following, and let's hope the weight starts falling back off again soon.

Week 1 - Saturday 31st July to Friday 6th August 2021

Start Weight - 23 stone 2 lbs (147.2kg)
Finish Weight - 22 stone 10 lbs (144.3kg)
Weight Lost - 6 lbs (2.9kg)
Total Steps - 51,870 (average 7,409)
Distance walked - 16.9 miles

A very good start to the new challenge saw me lose six pounds this week. I usually start quite well, it's later on that I falter, ha ha. Managed to complete my 5k steps every day with a 12.8k steps day on Tuesday as a bonus.

It's felt good getting back out on the road this week & I'm chuffed with the great start, hopefully will carry it on this week.

Week 2 - Saturday 7th to Friday 13th August 2021

Start Weight - 22 stone 10 lbs (144.3kg)
Finish Weight - 22 stone 9 lbs (143.8kg)
Weight Lost - 1 lb (0.5kg)
Total Weight Lost - 7 lb (3.4kg)
Total Steps - 45,465 (average 6,495)
Distance walked - 12.9 miles

Just a pound off this week which is a little disappointing but I didn't walk as much & I ate more so no surprises really. Hit the 5k steps every day though and got another 13 miles into my legs, felt better on the longer walks too.

Also, have now lost half a stone in two weeks so really pleased with that as well. More reasons to be cheerful then not.

Week 3 - Saturday 14th to Friday 20th August 2021

Start Weight - 22 stone 9 lbs (143.8kg)
Finish Weight - 22 stone 5 lbs (142.2kg)
Weight Lost - 4 lbs (1.6kg)
Total Weight Lost - 11 lbs (5.0kg)
Total Steps - 39,655 (average 5,665)
Distance walked - 8.9 miles

A quiet week this week where I struggled to get out on the road for any real time. Also, didn't work on Friday evening as at City game so didn't weigh in either.

On the plus side, feels like a loss this week and will be hoping for a good reduction when I weigh in next Friday. Have hit the 5k steps every day so far which is positive albeit my best day was only 6.8k.

Gofundme page has now reached £100, so 10% of the target achieved which is roughly where I am with the weight loss too.

Week 4 - Saturday 21st August to Friday 27th August 2021

Start Weight - 22 stone 5 lbs (143.8kg)
Finish Weight - 22 stone 2 lbs (140.8kg)
Weight Lost - 3 lb (1.4 kg)
Total Weight Lost - 1 stone (6.4kg)
Total steps - 41,447 (average 5,921)
Distance walked - 9.5 miles

Having not weighed last week, this time around the loss was always going to be higher; however it was very pleasing to get a half stone loss in a fortnight. That's a stone off now in just 28 days, a good start along the road.

Still maintaining the 5k steps a day.

Week 5 - Saturday 28th August to Friday 3rd Sept 2021

Start Weight - 22 stone 2 lbs (140.8kg)
Finish Weight - 22 stone 0 lbs (139.8kg)
Weight Lost - 2 lbs (1.0kg)
Total Weight Lost - 1 stone 2 lbs (7.4kg)
Total steps - 52,549
Distance walked - 14.4 miles

Upped the eating and the walking this week, resulting in a two pound loss. Did the longest walk so far in one hit, 3.4 miles which was to Coles Printers & back. Hopefully won't be too long before I put my foot down (pun intended) and start doing some longer walks.

Highest step total yet, over 52k., and continuing the 5k+ a day, that's 35 successive days now.

Week 6 - Saturday 4th to Friday 10th September 2021

Start Weight - 22 stone 0 lbs (139.8kg)
Finish Weight - 21 stone 13 lbs (139.5kg)
Weight Lost - 1 lb (0.3kg)
Total Weight Lost - 1 stone 3 lbs (7.7kg)
Total steps -
Distance walked - 9.2 miles

Another pound off this week means I've now lost weight for six consecutive weeks, albeit just about! Walking this week seemed to be within work rather than specific walks though I did do a couple of 2 milers.

Hoping to get into some sort of rhythm with the walking though work is hampering this somewhat. 5k achieved every day too, that's now 42 days and counting.
